Responsible Gambling: Keeping Your Betting a Bit of Craic

I love a bet on the weekend’s sport. But I’ve also seen how quickly it can stop being a bit of fun for some people. So this page matters to me as much as anything else on the site.

A Night Out, Not a Second Income

The bookies always have an edge. Over time, most people who bet lose more than they win. That’s fine if you treat betting as paying for entertainment, like a cinema ticket or a round in the pub. It’s not fine if you’re relying on it to pay a bill or win back what you’ve lost.

The House Rules I Bet By Myself

  • Set a budget before you start, and only bet what you can afford to lose.
  • Use deposit limits. Every reputable bookie lets you set daily, weekly or monthly limits. Set them when you sign up, not when you need them.
  • Never chase losses. A bigger bet to win it back is how small losses become big ones.
  • Don’t bet when you’re upset, stressed or have had a few drinks.
  • Keep track of what you put in and what you take out.
  • Take breaks. Time-outs and reality checks are there for a reason.

When a Flutter Stops Being a Flutter

It might be time to step back if you:

  • bet more than you planned, or more often than you planned
  • borrow money or use money meant for bills to bet
  • hide your betting from people close to you
  • feel anxious, low or irritable when you’re not betting
  • keep betting to win back losses

Blocking Every Licensed Bookie With One Request

Under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) runs the National Gambling Exclusion Register. One request lets you exclude yourself from every GRAI-licensed operator at once.

Bear in mind that it only covers bookies with a GRAI licence. If you use a bookie licensed elsewhere, you’ll also need to use that site’s own self-exclusion tools, usually through your account settings or customer support. That’s one reason I flag the licence status of every one of the betting sites in Ireland I rate.

Keeping Betting Away From Under-18s

Betting is for adults only. No one under 18 can open an account, and every bookie will check your age and ID. If you share a phone or computer with children, parental control software can block betting sites.
